Spicy Tempeh Burgers


I have been going on a bit of a tempeh bender lately which inspired this recipe for this vegan patty made out of tempeh and fresh veggies. This is the perfect veggie-friendly dish for cookout season so I am pairing it with this fun cookout friendly mix by KAYTRANADA.

Tempeh Burgers



(makes 4 patties)
1 package of tempeh
1 jalapeno pepper
1/2 onion
3 cloves of garlic
1 small carrot
3 tablespoons liquid aminos
1 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoons hot sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
1/4 teaspoon cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper

Shred tempeh using a cheese grater (it is quite soft so this part is easy) breaking up any smaller pieces with a fork.

Place the pepper, onion, garlic and carrot in a blender until it makes a paste. Combine this paste with the shredded tempeh and mix well with the liquid aminos, oil, hot sauce and seasonings. Place in the refridgerator for 30 minutes to an hour.

Remove the mixture from the fridge and coat the bottom of a cast iron pan or skillet with olive oil and place over medium heat. Form the tempeh mixture into four balls and roll in the breadcrumbs. Place two balls at a time in the pan, pressing them with a spatula until they from a patty. Cook for 7 minutes on each side or until brown. Serve with your favorite condiment and enjoy!

  1. Looks good and will give it a try very soon since this would be a great way of serving tempeh along with a nice sauce to new people. We produced Betsy’s Tempeh in Mich. for 9 1/2 years so I had to come up with many tempeh recipes when we introduced our tempeh in various stores, food coops, etc.
    It’s fun to read all the interesting tempeh recipes on line.
